PART II: AEROSPACE OVERVIEW
|
Stennis Technology Park focus: geospatial
|
...The vision of a technology park close to the John C. Stennis Space Center
actually began some 40 years ago, but it's only been in recent years that the
dream has begun to take shape.
...A private developer from Mobile - Hancock County Development LLC -
pulled together around 1,000 acres of land south of Stennis International Airport
and north of Interstate 10 to create Stennis Technology Park. The vision is to
attract to the park startups and established companies involved in activities
directly related to the propulsion and geospatial technologies work at Stennis
Space Center.
...It's not an unusual approach. For years technology parks have sprung up
around major federal and state research, development, test and evaluation
activities. In Alabama, Cummings Research Park developed in proximity to
Marshall Space Flight Center and Redstone Arsenal. Closer to this area,
technology companies have clustered around Eglin Air Force Base and set up
shop in at least two adjacent parks.
...The first building at Stennis Technology Park was built in 2005, and plans are
moving forward for several other buildings. About 100 acres is in the first phase
of development.
...The vision is to create an environment that will combine the commercial
activities of the park with a residential area. Developers envision creating a town
square and a "walkable" community in keeping with the designs tenets promoted
by so-called new urbanists.
