...It was clear back in 2008 that Mobile and Alabama state officials
understood the significance of the Air Force awarding the tanker contract to
the Northrop Grumman/EADS team. But that’s not surprising, since this is the
same state that saw the value of winning the Mercedes-Benz plant in 1993.
...The huge Northrop Grumman/EADS project at the Brookley Industrial
Complex was sidelined for a while by a rebidding process, but eventually large
aircraft manufacturing came to the complex south of the city.
...Large aircraft manufacturers attracted, as expected, a host of suppliers.
While a lot of them chose Mobile or Baldwin counties, many others found
the convenience of Jackson and George counties in Mississippi particularly
appealing, including those with interests in unmanned aerial systems.
...One of the less-heralded but significant events in 2008 was the approval
given to fly Fire Scout UAVs in the skies of South Mississippi. It opened
the door for other product flights.
...The Northrop Grumman Unmanned Systems Center is now even larger,
taking up an additional 30 acres. Several smaller UAV companies have also
arrived at Trent Lott Aviation Technology Park, north of Interstate 10.
...Back before the turn of the decade, it appeared that the Mobile/Moss Point
axis had a lock on aircraft manufacturing. But that changed when Stennis
International Airport, for so long a bride’s maid in the search for a large
aircraft manufacturer, landed its own. -
