...Not a day seems to pass without another layoff announcement or a business
closing, whether in South Mississippi, the state or the nation. It’s impacting
everyone, from the big guys to the little guys, from businesses with unions to
those without.
...But there are jobs available in a large range of occupations.
...A job seeker with a computer could make his or her first stop the
Mississippi Department of Employment Security Web site (www.mdes.ms.
gov), a virtual one-stop shop for information for both job seekers and
companies looking to hire.
...There are four sections: Job Seeker Services, Employer Services,
Unemployment Services and Labor Market Information. For those looking for
work, the Job Seeker Services can help with a search for jobs, information on
training and education, job hunting tips, veteran services and information on
equal opportunity.
...Click on the Job Seeker Services tab and it will take you to another page
with several options, including a way to apply for jobs with the state, federal
government and even Mississippi’s colleges. It also provides information on
upcoming job fairs.
...There are two broad categories of searchable job databases: Mississippi
Newspaper Classifieds and Job Central. The newspaper portion lists all the
state’s newspapers, and takes you directly to the job search functions
maintained by newspapers.
...Job Central uses the searchable services of Job Central, Indeed, Google and
Simply Hired. Combined with the newspapers, they provide sizeable listings
that provide any job seeker with multiple options. The databases allow a job
seeker to search for specific job types using a keyword function and specific
locations.
...In a search in early December, for instance, requesting information for a
non-specified job type within 10 miles of Gulfport, Job Central came up with
224 entries, Indeed had 914 and Google had 1,286. Some listings had multiple
positions or openings.
...Another search for a non-specified job type within 10 miles of Bay St.
Louis showed 89 listings on Job Central, 84 on Indeed, 96 with Google and
263 with Simply Hired. Again, some of the listings had multiple openings.
...The job seeker can specify the proximity to a particular city, from as little as
5 miles to as much as 300 miles.
...But the MDES site is not just for job seekers. Companies can go to the
section “Employer Services” and find everything from a way to register to
employee job training, job placement services and more.
...For those without a computer or who simply prefer the personal contact
there are the WIN Job Centers that operate statewide. South Mississippi has
five centers, including two in Harrison County at Gulfport and Biloxi. Neither
Stone County nor George County have WIN Job Centers. - David Tortorano,
