...It's a bright spot for manufacturing, and provides a lesson about what a big
company can see in less-developed Mississippi versus highly developed
Southern California.
...It’s a case of less is more.
...Northrop took a chance back in 2005 when it opted to set up its Moss Point
Unmanned Systems Center in a county with no background in aerospace. Too
few qualified applicants and it would have been a disaster.
...But the Unmanned Systems Center wound up with 1,200 applicants for 40
positions. A new line in San Diego would have brought a couple of hundred,
officials said. And the icing on the cake: the Moss Point plant broke learning
curve records.
...Ed Walby, director of business development for Global Hawk in San Diego,
Calif., said it’s a matter of opportunities: there’s a lot in San Diego, and it’s
hard to “grow” a workforce that wants to spend a career with the Northrop
family. It’s even tapped out engineers.
...Northrop’s approach worked. But the experiment may be as significant for
South Mississippi’s future as having the facility itself. Applicants continue to
contact the company about openings, and for an industry concerned over the
growing talent shortage, that’s noteworthy. -
