...By 2020, the region between east New Orleans and Bay St. Louis, Miss.,
has developed into a sprawling space complex hosting operations of some of
the biggest names in the international space community.
...The three key components are an 800-acre research park anchored by the
Michoud Assembly Facility in New Orleans, a research park in Slidell
operated by the University of New Orleans, and the “Stennis complex” in
South Mississippi, including the INFINITY Science Center.
...NASA’s decision to make Michoud a key location for the Constellation
Program prompted much of this transformation, though separate decisions
made earlier made the complex a reality. UNO decided well before the NASA
decision to create a research and technology park in Slidell, in part because of
the growth of St. Tammany Parish and proximity to SSC. Stennis Technology
Park also preceded the NASA decision.
...The Constellation Program, because it was the first step to the colonization
of space, created new business opportunities that could barely be seen in
2008. Constellation led to the creation of businesses involved in creating
permanent space outposts, from creating buildings to finding ways to utilize
the resources of the moon.
...One of the areas that managed to attract newcomers is Pearl River County,
which set up relatively small parks to accommodate specialty businesses
needing relative privacy. The area along Mississippi 603 also boomed as a
result of the space programs. - Tcp
